Lava Drip Lamp

Just a table....

Right out of high school some girl friends and I went up to the San Juan Islands in search of summer jobs. I got on at at Rosario Resort on Orcas Island cleaning guest rooms. There I met a couple artists who had been hired by the resort to paint canvas for the newly remodeled beach side suites. The guys let me work with them as long as I didn't tell their boss. I have several paintings at Rosario that I will never be able to claim as my own work : )

In the fall of 1996 I did this table after one of those paintings as a memorial.

Playa Spiaggia

I use a lot of drift wood and tree branches to decorate my home. The idea came to me years ago when I was a child. My sister Manessa and I spent a lot of time at the ocean growing up. In those days children found their own fun rather then rely on video games and television. Manessa and I would make the outlines of houses from a birds view in the sand. We would draw out furniture and appliances sometimes using drift logs and different flotsam and jetsam as props. The idea was to play house but ultimately we spent the entire game designing and drawing our palace.

I never grew tired of the ocean and I never lost the idea of incorporating my home around it. I call this line of my art 'Playa Spiaggia' meaning Beach in Spanish and Italian. I don't believe the English language properly applies the beauty to the beach or it's treasures, so most of my work in this category will be named with a foreign thought.

This piece is called 'Cavita Buco'
